Energy Healing 101: Pranic, Tantric, and Reiki

You have probably come across exotic-sounding terms such as “chakra”, “prana”, “aura”, and “tantra” in your course of reading books on spirituality, sex, and healing in the New Age literature section of the bookstore. But what’s the real scoop behind these exotic vocabularies?

chakras

Are All Energy Healings the Same?

Chakra or energy center is a term used in Pranic healing, an ancient Hindu system of energy healing. “Prana” means life energy. “Aura” is another terminology traced to Pranic healing. Aura is a non-physical body that consists of energy, which exists along with our physical body. The aura that covers our body is said to have seven layers pertaining to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual as manifested by energy. Studying the color and thickness of auras can be an indication on the state of health of individuals. Seven colors are associated with aura and interpreted into seven personalities. These colors are all present in an individual but one or two are more pronounced.

Green – ambitious achiever
Blue – spiritual peacemaker
White – unconventional chameleon
Red – activist
Orange – creative communicator
Yellow – happy, positive
Violet – psychic

Although Tantra is popularly associated with the peculiar practice of sex and spirituality, it is another method of energy healing. It comes from the word “tan” which means to spread or expand. The concept of connectedness is a recurring theme in Tantric writings on sex and spirituality. As a method of healing, spirituality and sex figure prominently. It is presupposed that the union of man and woman can reach spiritual levels during orgasm, which removes the body and mind off collected impurities. These impurities being negative energies can in turn manifest as physical illnesses.

Unlike Pranic and Tantric healings, which have Hindu origins, Reiki originated from Japan. It is relatively younger than Pranic and Tantric healings having been rediscovered in the early 1900’s. Reiki stands for universal energy, an energy brought forth by higher intelligence. Students of Reiki are taught how to tap this energy to heal physical, emotional, and mental illnesses.

Although Pranic, Tantra, and Reiki are all systems of energy healing, they differ in the type of energy tapped for healing: life energy, sexual energy, and universal energy respectively.

The concepts of the connectedness of mind, body, and spirit; the connection of individuals to all living and nonliving things around them and to the universe; and how energy impacts physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being are some of the salient similarities of these three healing methods.

Why Do People Turn to Energy Healing?

Pranic, Tantric, and Reiki are considered alternative methods of healing. In spite of the availability and relative accessibility of modern medicine, how come more and more people are being drawn to them?
Here are some possible reasons:

• Energy healing worked where modern medicine failed. For several reasons both explainable and unexplainable, modern medical treatment failed to heal ailments and conditions in several if not many persons. Research or data may not be able to support this statement. But for the families of the dying as well as for the dying patient, they would take the risk of using alternative methods ranging from herbals and organics, faith healers, witch doctors, and New Age healing techniques just to be get well.

• People perceive modern medicine to be isolating. Medical treatments are oftentimes focused on the disease and its causative agent, which can make a patient feel isolated and treated like a mere host of the disease. Although recent developments in hospital practice are gradually promoting the holistic treatment of a patient, the perception still persists. Unlike in energy healing, since energy and spirituality are intimately linked, the patient feels that all aspects of his health are being attended to.

• Energy healing is non-obtrusive and natural thus it is safer. Repeated surgical procedures are physically and emotionally traumatic for most patients. It is but a logical and attractive option to both patient and families to look for less stressful health interventions. Moreover, with the rising popularity of New Age religions, going natural is the way to go.

• Energy healing is a good way of relieving stress. Meditation is part and parcel of energy healing methods and this is an added come-on for highly stressed people. Moreover, sophisticated equipment is not required thus it becomes all the more convenient for students and future students of energy healing.

The battle between alternative healing and mainstream medicine continues as both present the benefits of their approach. But in the final analysis, what matters is the restoration of good health.

Tips for Balancing the Solar Plexus

Before reading this article, it may benefit you to read the article; ‘What are Chakras?’ and the previous articles.

The Solar Plexus is known as the power chakra and is located just below the sternum. It rules our personal power, will, digestive system, solar-plexusmuscles as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.

Its Sanskrit name is Manipura meaning lustrous gem and relates to the element of fire.

Here are some ways to balance the Solar Plexus Chakra:-

Crystals may be used. Crystals for the Solar plexus are all the yellow ones: Citrine, Calcite and Tiger Eye are just a few suggestions.

Burning Sage and Bergamot scented essential oils and incense are also a pleasant way to help.

Wearing or carrying something yellow will also be a help.

Use an affirmation: My mind is clear. Say this silently or out loud to yourself daily, or as you feel the need.

The musical note for the Solar Plexus is E, so music played in this key is ideal for this purpose.

Starches are the best foods for the Solar Plexus.

If you can’t you say no easily, are you able to make commitments and stick to them, don’t speak your mind openly and without fear, don’t honor your body’s needs (i.e. sleep when tired, eat when hungry, rest when fatigued),  aren’t mutually respectful in your personal relationships,
can’t allow others to be unhappy or uncomfortable without trying to rescue them, don’t do as much for yourself as you do for others, aren’t honestly doing what you want to do in life?
Then your Solar Plexus probably need some attention.

Here are a few suggestions to bring things back into balance:
Sleep on things before you commit to them
Write down your daily goals every morning
Write down your accomplishments every night
Take yourself on a special date at least once a month
Start a project and finish it
Learn to belly dance

Imagine that the fire is in your belly,    burning up all your unwanted emotions.
See them all going up in flames,    all the long held unwanted anger burning up    and leaving a sense of peace behind.
Whenever you feel a long forgotten hurt or anger come up,    see it burn up,    so you release it forever.
Whenever you feel the need, close your eyes and see the fire inside burning up all the feelings you no longer need or want.
When you are ready open your eyes feeling much lighter as you have released all the anger that was eating you up inside.

Tips for Balancing the Base Chakra

Before reading this article, it may benefit you to read the previous article; ‘What are Chakras.’

The base chakra forms our foundation and is related to our survival instincts and sense of connection to the earth. It relates to the lymph base-chakrasystem, skeletal system (teeth and bones), legs and feet.

You need this chakra functioning properly to keep you grounded and in touch with reality, or as the saying goes “to keep your feet firmly on the ground”. If you don’t, you will often feel not quite with it, spacey, off with the pixies.

Its Sanskrit Name is Muladhara meaning root support and relates to the Earth element.

Here are some ways to balance the Base Chakra:-

A good way to start with the Base Chakra is to walk barefoot on the ground, this way you are very connected with the earth, dig in the garden, soak in a salt bath, do grounding activities such as cooking, cleaning and other related tasks.
Crystals may be used. Crystals for the Base Chakra are all the black and red coloured ones: Hematite, Garnet, Red Tigers Eye and Black Tourmaline are just a few suggestions.

Burning earthy scented essential oils and incense are also a pleasant way to help.

Wearing or carrying something red. This will also be a help.

Using an affirmation: I am strong and energetic. Say this silently or out loud to yourself daily, or as you feel the need.

The musical note for the Base Chakra is C, so music played in this key is ideal for this purpose.

Eating the right food will also help, proteins and meat are the best for the Base Chakra.

Do you feel overly concerned with survival, fearful, worried, scared that you can’t handle life, isolated, like you don’t fit in, don’t belong, believe you cannot take care of yourself, unsatisfied, no matter what you do, preoccupied with food, unworthy or undeserving? If any of these apply to you then your Base Chakra probably needs attention.

Here are a few suggestions to bring things back into balance:
Salt your home, place a pinch of salt in every corner, window and entrance
Create a routine to keep yourself grounded
Get a pet or plant to look after
Get order in your life
Look after your feet
Organize your home, clean out your drawers
Lie on the ground
Cook your own meals, baking bread & peeling potatoes are grounding
Work in the garden
Have a picnic
Build an alter relating to the base chakra, use red candles, burn cedar wood oil, have red flowers, red ribbon or a pot plant.

Meditation for the Base Chakra:

A Guided Meditation for balancing the base chakra. You may either get someone to read this to you, or you may read it out and record it in your own voice. It is best read slowly, allowing for pauses where appropriate.

Sit comfortably with your spine straight.
Take a deep breath    and relax,    let all the tensions go.
Concentrate on your breathing,    in,    out,    in,    out.
Now imagine yourself in a peaceful grassy clearing.
You are surrounded by majestic gum trees.
The earth is soft but firm underfoot.
You feel at peace.
Looking around,    you see a path leading out of the clearing.
Walking down the path    you notice it is littered with leaves   and has been trodden by many others.
You come to a small pond with a rock chair next to it.
Sitting on the rock you feel as if it was made especially for you.
When you are comfortable,    imagine your root chakra as a ball of red-brown energy,    a very earthy colour.
As you sit there the colour runs down your legs and deep into mother earth.
This is keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground    and in touch with mother earth.
Feel the energy from the earth    flowing up to you,    putting you in touch with the earth.
Take a moment to really feel this.
It is now time to leave your rock chair    knowing you can return at any time.
Remember the feeling and carry it with you at all times.
It is now time to open your eyes and return to this reality as we know it.

You may use this chakra balancing meditation whenever you feel the need for it, or as often as you like.

What are Chakras ?

chakras1Chakras, which mean wheels in Sanskrit, are energy centers running along our spine. Ancient Hindus formulated that there were seven of these energy wheels, each one a different color and spinning in a clockwise direction.

We all have seven major chakras and many minor chakras. They are like spinning funnels that come out from our body. When they are perfectly balanced and spinning correctly we are in perfect health. If one or more are out of balance, too open or too closed we feel off color, out of balance, or sick. This is what is called dis-ease. Each chakra relates to organs or parts of the body and each need to be looked after and balanced regularly. You can work on each chakra separately starting with the base chakra, and then bring them all into balance, or you can work on all the chakras at the same time.

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine.
The sacral centre is just below the navel.
The solar plexus is about two inches above the navel.
The heart is about the level of the physical heart.
The throat is at the base of the neck.
The third eye is on the forehead between the eyes.
The crown is at the top of the head.

These are the 7 major chakras and there are many minor chakras as well.

All chakras interact with one another. Each chakra corresponds to a particular colour frequency and with a particular gland or organ. This means that the organ or gland vibrates at a sympathetic rhythm to a colour vibration. When we feel “off colour” or “washed out” we need to re-tune the colour, just like tuning in a radio set to a station so that it restores the signal loud and clear.

In a healthy body the chakras absorb and distribute colour energy evenly, while in an unhealthy person toxins may begin to collect causing physical, mental and emotional problems.

Each chakra can be balanced using colours, crystals, essential oils, music, affirmations or changing what you do. It is also beneficial to have a chakra balance to bring them all back into balance. This can be done at home by yourself or you can go to a crystal therapist or colour therapist to have it done.

When all your chakras are balanced – you should be healthy and well balanced.

It is important to have all your chakras in balance, sometimes when people start on the spiritual path they concentrate on the third eye, but it is very important to start at the bottom. Our body is like a building, you need to get the foundations right before you work on the top floors. So make sure your bottom chakras are balanced and functioning properly.

Each chakra is represented by a colour:

Base – Red
Sacral – Orange
Solar Plexus – Yellow
Heart – Green or Pink
Throat – Blue
Third Eye – Purple
Crown – White

The easiest way to bring the chakras back into balance is to carry or wear the appropriate colour.

Another very easy and pleasant way is to listen to a chakra balancing CD. Music is a very relaxing way to bring things back into balance. Ideally this is done while meditating, but just listening to the music will help. And let’s face it anything is better than nothing. Playing a chakra balancing CD is a great way to balance the whole family at the same time and usually this has a calming effect on every one as well.

An easy but effective way to balance and align the chakras is to do a guided meditation lying down with crystals or colour patches of material on each chakra.

A Guided Meditation for balancing the chakras.

You may either get someone to read this to you, or you may read it out and record your own voice. It is best read slowly, allowing for pauses where appropriate.
Relax,    take a couple of deep breaths and breathe out all your stress and tension.
See yourself standing in a valley,    you are surrounded with red tulips,  everywhere you look it is a sea of red.
As you start to walk though the tulips you feel yourself absorbing the red energy.
You feel your root chakra come alive.
As you walk further you come to the end of the red tulips.
You have now come to a field of orange poppies,     they are everywhere,    and the flowers appear to be dancing in the light breeze.
As you walk along you notice you are starting to go up the side of a hill.
Walking through the poppies you feel yourself absorbing the colour orange.
Your sacral center is alive.
You now reach the end of the poppies.
You are now in a field of brilliant yellow daises.
Smell the fragrance and see the sunny yellow flowers.
As you continue your journey up the hill    you feel the yellow absorbing into your body    and your solar plexus is alive.
All too soon you come to the end of the yellow.
You now find yourself in a beautiful field of soft green grass.
As you walk across it you feel the green absorbing up through your feet.
Your heart chakra is alive.
The green grass field takes you further up the hill till you reach a field of bluebells,    their delicate blue heads bowed slightly as if to greet you.
As you walk through them,    feel the blue absorbing into your body,   feel your throat chakra opening.
As you walk further up the hill you reach the end of the beautiful bluebells    and find yourself in a field of indigo irises.
Stand for a moment and absorb the indigo colour flooding into your third eye.
Walking further up the hill    you come to the end of the indigo and reach a patch of purple pansies.
Their beautiful petals are like faces looking up at you.
Hundreds of them all are projecting their colour up to your crown chakra.
Just stand for a moment and absorb.
As you slowly continue up the hill    you leave your pansies    and reach the top of the hill.
Here you are surrounded by a sea of tiny white flowers.
As you sit in the middle of the white flowers    you notice you are on the top of the hill.
Looking down you can now see all the colours,    red,    orange,   yellow,    green,    blue,    indigo,    purple    and white,    like stripes in the side of the hill.
Sit for a moment and take it all in.
You feel very peaceful and every chakra is alive.
It is now time to leave your rainbow hill.
Remember the feeling of all your chakras being alive.
Return to the top of the hill whenever you feel the need.
It is now time to open your eyes and return to this reality as we know it.

You may use this chakra balancing meditation whenever you feel the need for it, or as often as you like.

The Power and Magic of Crystals in the 21st Century.

Crystals

Crystals

When looking at crystals, a lot of us see things of natural beauty and innate power. Then there are those among us who see nothing but a rock, it may look pretty but has no further value. They will then scoff at and deride the knowledge of those of us who believe in the power and magic of Crystals and use their physical and metaphysical properties to our advantage, These are the same people who blindly extol the virtues and benefits of our modern day technologies, with little to no thought of natures role in making these technologies possible.

Yet, many of the wonders of our daily lives that we take for granted owe their existence in some way to crystals and the mineralogical kingdom. Here are just a few examples:-

Keeping Time. In order to keep our lives on time and punctual we have come to depend very heavily on accurate time pieces. To do this most of our clocks and watches use Quartz movements. Until recently the world clock kept its time using a Quartz movement. Today it uses Atomic decay as the measuring device.

Our Computers. Imagine trying to operate in your modern lifestyle without one of these. Yet the main driving component of your computer is the silicon chip. Admittedly these are synthesized these days for uniformity and consistency, as Mother Nature doesn’t make identical duplicates. But the very first one used in the prototypes were natural pieces of silicon dioxide; Quartz.

Lasers. At the core of our modern day miracle tools are Crystals, the two most commonly used are Ruby and Emerald. The medical fraternity has come to depend on these devises; which are used predominately in eye and cosmetic surgery.

Imagine the modern day builder without his laser level, or the speaker without his laser pointer.

Precision Bearings. Very fine tolerance technical tools depend on the crystal world to provide extremely durable bearings. At the cheaper end of the scale are Quartz and Garnet through to the more expensive Ruby, Emerald, and Diamond.

There are a great many other examples that can be used to demonstrate the use of crystals in our technologies and industry, but the short list above will be satisfactory for this article.

Let’s look at some other uses; Mica is crushed up finely and provides the shine in the best brands of lipstick. Lapis Lazuli is still used (ground up of course) in some exclusive brands of eye shadow. It provides that deep blue/purple colour, very popular in Egyptian times.

And of course a variety of stones are crushed and included in many of today’s orthodox ointments, tinctures and creams.

So why should it be surprising to these people when we talk of the Healing and magical properties of these same crystals, as we use them in our day to day life. If we go back to Biblical times, the Breast Plate of the High Priest was adorned with crystals selected for their peculiar energies and properties.

The Crown and Scepter of Royalty are decorated with crystals chosen, not for their beauty (as beautiful as they are), but for the energy and power they would afford.

A very interesting carry over from times past is in our use of jewellery. For example, Diamonds (known as a girl’s best friend) are the most popular stone for engagement rings. These were originally used because of their power or property to join or bind one to the other. Gold bands were chosen as wedding rings as Gold carries the energy of and is a symbol for fidelity.

With just these few examples you can see that Crystals play a vital role in our daily lives, with more going on behind the scenes with crystals and gemstones than may first be realized. So if we can utilize them so well in our technologies, why shouldn’t we be able to use them to enhance our spiritual and healing powers?

Of course, a lot of us already realize that these are powerful allies, to augment our spiritual lives and to assist in our healing.
